Research Center
We have been doing many clinical studies in rheumatology for the past 25 years. These studies allow us to be in the forefront of treatment of these conditions.
The following studies are ongoing at our institution:
Puricase ® (pegloticase) for Gout
Tanezumab for Osteoarthritis Of The Knee Or Hip
Jak-3 Inhibitor for Rheumatoid Arthritis (oral medication)
Reasons to participate
- You may receive better care than what you are currently receiving. New studies offer you
the ability to receive a medication not available to the public.
- You will get closer monitoring. Any possible side effects and treatment success is monitored
carefully.
- You can help others with your condition.
- You may want to help answer important scientific questions.
Reasons NOT to participate Clinical trials are not right for everybody. Some reasons you may decide not to participate:
- Fear of the unknown. Some patients fear that they would receive an untested therapy or
one that is worse than the standard treatment. This fear is unfounded as researchers must
have good reason to believe a new therapy will be at least as good as the conventional
therapy before they test it on human subjects.
- Loss of choice. Patients will typically be assigned randomly to one arm or another in a
clinical trial. If you signed up for a clinical trial to get access to a new drug, you may be
disappointed as small group of patients may get a placebo agent. However, studies have
shown that a significant portion of these patients will respond to this treatment as well! In
addtion, if your treament is not successful you can always drop out of the trial.
- You don't have the time. The downside of all that extra attention and testing is that it
takes time. If you participate in a clinical trial, you may spend more time and have longer
evaluations.
